California Avenue Is Under Construction: What Wahiawa Drivers and Central Health Patients Should Know

If California Avenue has felt a little harder to navigate lately, there is a reason.

A City and County of Honolulu roadway-improvement project has been underway since June 2026 along California Avenue between Kamehameha Highway and Puninoni Street.

What the current project is doing

The Department of Facility Maintenance project is focused on pavement repairs and roadway improvements intended to improve road conditions and extend the life of the street.

Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding State holidays, and requires partial lane closures. Weather permitting, the project is expected to continue into February 2027.

Why this matters if you are coming to Central Health

Central Health is at 935 California Avenue in Wahiawa Town Center, directly along the project corridor.

The City has warned that some driveway access may be temporarily restricted as construction moves through the corridor. Emergency access is expected to remain available, and the project team has said it will try to minimize disruptions.

For patients, the practical advice is simple: if you have an appointment during construction hours, allow a little extra time and follow any posted traffic-control directions.

The project is moving through Wahiawa, not happening all at once

When the project began, City representatives said work would start near Kamehameha Highway and generally progress toward Wahiawa Heights, although the sequence could change as construction moves forward.

That means the impact in front of any one business may vary from week to week.

We are asking for advance access notices

Because Central Health sees scheduled medical patients throughout the day—including patients who may have mobility limitations—we are asking the project team to include us on any business-notification list for work that could affect the Wahiawa Town Center driveways or access immediately in front of 935 California Avenue.

Our goal is not to complain about needed road work. It is simply to know about access changes early enough to tell patients and staff before they arrive.

Who is coordinating the work

BOW Construction Management Service, Inc. is coordinating traffic management, business access, deliveries, refuse collection, and emergency-service access for the project. Public notices list 808-520-1733 for project questions and concerns.

One road, several major changes

California Avenue is changing in more than one way at the same time. The new Wahiawa Civic Center is rising across from Central Health. The future library and workforce center is under development nearby. And now the roadway connecting these places is being repaired and reworked too.
